Tough fight coming for Congressman Bass

Dear Editor:
The headline in The Sunday Telegraph on Sept. 3, “Challengers face steep climb in 2nd District,” was a bit misleading.
The first sentence of the article did refer to the “Republican primary ballot.” However, many readers might have thought that the headline referred to the general election in November and not the primary yesterday.
It is certainly not unusual that a sixth-term congressman, such as Charles Bass, should expect little threat from any primary contenders for his party’s nomination to run in a general election.
What is surprising is that it appears that Congressman Bass, who has served in the House of Representatives for over a decade, is facing a serious threat from Democratic challenger Paul Hodes in the November general election.
A survey released by the Hodes campaign and conducted by Anzalone Liszt Research in late August, showed that incumbent Bass held only a one-point lead over Hodes among respondents.
Both the New York Times and the Washington Post are reporting that independent political analysts have forecast the possibility that one outcome of the November general election could be a narrow Democratic takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives.
With the Second Congressional District being one of a handful of house seats “in play” (as the pundits like to say), we likely will not have to wait until 2008 for New Hampshire to return to a place in the spotlight regarding national politics in America.
